PI is seemingly another example of lack of planning and lack of concern for the health of Marines.
It turns out that Parris Island has suffered from significant contamination of soil, surface water, and ground water for a number of years now. Since at least the 1970s, MCRD sprayed oil and petroleum products on all dirt and gravel road surfaces. This polluted the land with all sorts of chemicals – including PCBs. Most recruits who trained at this facility would have been subjected to breathing in contaminated dust from these practices during force marches, PT, close order, and other out-door activities. There are other potential vectors of human contamination as well – like explosives used in sand pits during obstacle course runs which would have dispersed the dust widely, mud pits used for slide for life and swing rope drills, etc. http://ow.ly/Hd8A5
